Three movies that I’ve wanted to see for a while now have finally hit theaters–Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jimi: All Is By My Side, and Guardians of the Galaxy. I still haven’t seen the sequel to Planet of the Apes, but have heard nothing but great things. GoTG is still making a killing at the box office pulling in over 94 million for the second week in a row. It even spoiled the premiere of ‘Lucy’ a film a lot of my contemporaries have been so adamant about.
Now let me analyze this for a second. Guardians of the Galaxy is about a band of criminals turned ‘heroes’, and has successfully been launched as Marvel’s latest franchise vehicle. Lucy deals with a woman who (through whatever circumstances) is able to use a much higher percentage of her brain and is since able to access both physical and mental abilities normal human beings aren’t able to. With it being the Summer, it doesn’t surprise me that a popcorn movie about space, explosions, and tough guys is beating out a heady, science fiction concept thriller. What makes it all the more exciting is that there are even more sequels coming out such as Expendables 3 and Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For. It’s safe to say, the trend will continue even if GoTG gets dethroned, it won’t be long before another popcorn blockbuster takes itself. In the mean time, the more intellectually ambitious plots and socially conscious themes will have to wait until all the explosions have died down. Once the dust clears, it’ll be award season. Until next weekend, see you at the movies!
